Telepathic Instruments, co-founded by Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, is set to release its debut product, the Orchid synthesizer, on December 18, 2024. Priced at $549, the initial release will be limited to 1,000 units, available exclusively to U.S. customers through the company’s official website.
The Orchid is an advanced chord-generating hardware synthesizer designed to enhance songwriting and musical exploration. It features a 12-key, velocity-sensitive keyboard and a unique chord logic system that allows users to select root notes and modify chord types using eight dedicated buttons. A central rotary dial enables users to adjust chord voicings and positions, facilitating quick variations.
Equipped with a 16-voice polyphonic synth engine, the Orchid offers virtual analog, FM, and reed piano emulations. It includes onboard ambient and modulation effects, a separate bass synth engine, and five performance modes: Strum, Slop, Arpeggiator, Pattern, and Harp. These modes provide diverse methods for chord playback, enhancing creative possibilities.
The synthesizer’s design, crafted by co-founder Ignacio Germade, features built-in stereo speakers and a rechargeable battery, ensuring portability. MIDI connectivity via USB-C and traditional 5-pin DIN allows integration with digital audio workstations and other instruments.
Kevin Parker conceived the idea for the Orchid over a decade ago, aiming to create an “ideas machine” for musicians. Co-founder Charl Laubscher emphasizes that the Orchid is intended to “shake up your creative process” and serve as a tool for experimentation.
Following the limited release, a wider launch is planned for 2025. Early adopters will have the opportunity to join Telepathic Instruments’ online community, The Garden, to contribute to the instrument’s development.
The Orchid represents a significant innovation in music technology, offering both seasoned musicians and newcomers a versatile tool for creative exploration.
