Teenage Engineering has unveiled the OP–XY, a cutting-edge portable sequencer, synthesizer, and sampler that builds upon the acclaimed workflow of the OP–Z. This new device introduces significant enhancements, including a dual-CPU architecture, built-in control voltage (CV) outputs, effect sends, and a high-quality digital-to-analog converter (DAC). With eight individual instrument tracks and eight auxiliary tracks, the OP–XY offers extensive control over both internal and external synthesizers, making it a comprehensive tool for musicians and producers.
Aesthetically, the OP–XY features an all-black exterior that matches the dimensions of the OP–1 Field. A distinctive grayscale gradient across its 16 sequencer inputs emphasizes its focus on serious sequencing. The high-resolution display presents grayscale graphics, with bright red indicators for recording and parameter locks, ensuring users have clear visual feedback during operation.
The device boasts a range of advanced features, including eight unique synth engines, a new drum sampler, multisampler capabilities, and a synth sampler. It supports 24-voice multitimbral synthesis and offers four filter types. Users can utilize six built-in effects, a master EQ, saturator, compressor, and limiter, all within a stereo signal path. The OP–XY also introduces “brain™,” an intelligent transposer that facilitates the creation of dynamic chord progressions, allowing tracks to evolve organically.
The sequencer is designed for flexibility, enabling each track to run independently at different speeds and lengths to create complex polyrhythms. Step components allow for variations on any step, controlling parameters such as pitch alteration, step skipping, or multiplication. Additional features include a creative tape looper, 24 punch-in effects for live performance, and a 16-track, 64-step sequencer with four pages. The device supports up to 10,000 project files with version history, ensuring ample space for creative exploration.
Connectivity options are robust, featuring USB-C audio/MIDI host and device capabilities, audio-in and audio-out ports, a multi-out jack for CV, MIDI, audio, and sync out, as well as MIDI-in. The OP–XY includes a built-in speaker and microphone, smooth parameter locks, a pressure-sensitive pitch bend, Bluetooth LE MIDI, and microtonal tuning. A built-in gyroscope adds an extra dimension to performance, allowing for motion-based modulation.
The OP–XY is now available for purchase at a price of $2,299.
